We continue on the trail leading out of the rain forest and into a savannah of tall grasses, heather and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards. Here we catch our first glimpse of Kibo across the plateau.

Elevation: 13,200 ft to 12,700 ft
Distance: 8 km/5 miles

Spectacular ice cliffs within the crater surround us and the views to jagged Mawenzi peak and beyond are breathtaking. Another hour’s walking takes us to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m).
